Quite knowingly adapted from Tobe Hooper’s 1974 TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, X
It sets itself up as a clever take on the slasher films of the 70s and early 80s. As a bonus, the movie within the movie is a 'elevated' porn movie (as a bonus, the actor Owen Campbell who plays the “director” looks a bit more like director Tobe Hooper). a group of pornographers rents a farmhouse from an elderly couple in the middle of nowhere in Texas (actually New Zealand). Writer-director West’s main idea here is to set up a contrast between the XXX filmmakers and the Bible-pounding civilians. It’s not an uninteresting idea, which of course plays off the puritanical cliché of yesteryear slasher films where the most sexually active characters are most likely to be killed off. In addition to MASSACRE, West includes nods to FRIDAY THE 13TH, Hooper’s EATEN ALIVE, and a very specific nod to HALLOWEEN. X takes place about 5 years after MASSACRE, so it may include a brief exchange about how home video is changing the porn industry (adult films have been available on VHS for about 3 years).
As good as the filmmaking is, X feels too studied
The film is very well directed and is a cross between the upcoming porn film and the horror that awaits the group. Mia Goth (in a double role; actually a triple if you stay after the credits) and Brittany Snow are the two porn stars who dive in with pleasure. Kid Cudi is the cocky stud, while Martin Henderson is the reliable Producer. Jenna Ortega is the "crew" all because of her loneliness (she managed to wear her clothes – she must have a better agent). Stephen Ure is the grumpy old man who rents out his guest house. The pacing is miserable even when it ramps up towards the very end. Once the carnage starts (if not with power tools), it still seems pretty typical of the movies you’re commenting on, no matter how well done and how “elevated” it is; you think it is.

It’s also too drawn-out to settle for a few gore-hounds, and once the blood gets flowing, it’s probably too rough for internet scribes who dream of producing extensive online essays dissecting it for its elevated intellect. There are a few twists, but not enough to offset the predictability. In the end, it’s not as clever as West thinks it is, and despite good direction and acting, it’s #39. it’s just too self-aware to be a fun thrill ride. A24 produced the most memorable horror films of the 21st century.
