Synopsis
A Montana farming family faces off against others encroaching on their land. Forry J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, has experience in the world of rodeo. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget”; his Montana accent and revert to his usual SoCal voice.
Kevin Costner is the patriarch of a dynastic ranch the size of several countries
His lifestyle is influenced by resort developers, tribal law, and the Montana state government. He resembles Rock Hudson from “The Giant,” trying to stick to the old ways. “Yellowstone” The action moves quickly, without an introduction, but the story moves at the natural pace of a desert day, adhering to tribal rituals, cowboy conventions, and political machinations. It’s a far-fetched case, teetering on the edge of law and justice, family and friendship.
The land and family are his life force
Costner seems like a natural fit for his character. He is a world-weary man who has seen too much and lied too often. He hears footsteps approaching, but he can only play his role out of habit, not loyalty. While some of the action is a bit confusing due to the lack of explanation, it feels natural, as if the viewer is being given a real slice of life, a glimpse into another world.
I am raising my rating to a “9”
I hope that the resolution of this saga will come with an emotional payoff that justifies its breadth and attention to detail. Update 7/20/18: After four episodes, this episode has a strong voice and a steady rhythm. We get the full story, from root to fruit. The new season of “Silo” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres of the month.
