Essex and Wales collide when Gavin and Stacey fall in love and bring their friends, family and luggage with them. Apart from scenes shot in London for the first episode, the entire series was filmed in Wales, including scenes set in the film. Essex. The house that the Shipmans' The (Gavin family) house is in Dinas Powys, a village a mile north-west of Barry, where the Wests (Stacey’s family) live. In series 3, both Bryn’s and Gavin’s car number plates are completely different from the previous series. Gavin’s blue Saxo T-reg (MY 1999) was replaced by an X-reg (MY 2000). Bryn’s green Picasso went from CV02 (MY 2002, registered in Cardiff) to HV54 (MY 2004, registered in Portsmouth). They are clearly different cars. Gavin & Stacey: Outtakes (2007). It’s nothing mind-blowing, and it’s not going to move mountains or change paradigms. Rather, it is a character study of two (extended) families, one from Wales and one from England, who come together after an affair and marriage. It’s a simple, fun and friendly class. I wish there were more shows like this around, where the characters are all kind-hearted, loving, communal, and despite their faults, think and express their love for the people in their lives. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s not invented either. It’s an honest slice of life and it’s beautiful. It’s not the ridiculous slapstick comedy that British Comedies often are. This is more character driven.
