M: Do you ever get lonely?
Synopsis
A man quits his job to care for his dying grandmother, motivated by her condition. He makes plans to win her favor before she dies. In fact, this is the film debut of Usa Semkhum, a 78-year-old housewife who plays the role of Meng Jiu’s grandmother. Ama: I wouldn’t call it loneliness.
This is part of the life process
Ama: I really have a problem with the day after Chinese New Year. When all the leftovers from last night are in the fridge and I know I’ll have to eat them all by myself. How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is one of the most hyped movies of May 2024, and let me tell you, it lives up to the hype. I rarely give any movie a top 10, but this one looks like it’s going to be an exception.
One of the film’s strongest points is its relatability
The premise of the story is simple, which can easily lead to a predictable and boring experience. However, this film demonstrates how simplicity, executed flawlessly, can lead to perfection. It’s nice to see how the story unfolds naturally, without relying on unnecessary twists. This allows viewers to fully immerse themselves in the characters and their journeys without feeling lost or, most importantly, bored.
The actors deserve huge praise for breathing life into these characters
Despite the fact that the story is fictional, the characters, especially in Asian families, seem incredibly believable. Their dynamics, conflicts and expressions of love and disappointment resonate deeply, especially with those familiar with the nuances of Asian households. Their acting, from barely noticeable facial expressions to the rhythm of their everyday conversations, give the film a touching authenticity. The soundtrack also plays a crucial role in making How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies such a soulful experience.
The music, although simple, is masterfully used
Carefully selected soundtracks emphasize the emotional weight of the key walls, adding a layer of sadness without overwhelming it. Overall, this film should be a must watch. It’s a testament to the power of authentic storytelling, sympathetic characters, and a well-crafted soundtrack.
